What is Botox®?
Botox® is a trade name for Botulinum Toxin type A which is a neurotoxin and works by relaxing the muscles.
What does Botox® treatment for migraine and other type of chronic headaches involve?
First you will be offered a consultation (Telephone/Video/in person). During the consultation, details of the treatment including potential complications and possible side effects will be explained. This will help you to make an informed decision whether you would like to go ahead with the procedure. On the day of the treatment, our specialist doctor will administer multiple injections of Botox® in the face and possibly in the scalp, neck and shoulders under sterile conditions.
How does Botox® work for migraines and other chronic headaches?
Mechanism of Botox® in chronic headaches is unknown. However, Botox® is a well-recognised and effective treatment for chronic migraine in adults. Besides, it is also effective in tension and cluster headaches.
What are the other uses of Botox®?
These include hemi-facial spasms, lower back pain and neuropathic pain.
How long are the effects going to last for?
The effects of Botox® in chronic headaches last for 3 to 6 months. Once the effects wear off, treatment can be repeated 2 to 3 times a year.
What are the side effects of Botox®?
Majority of the patients who receive Botox® treatment for migraines and other chronic headaches tolerate the treatment well and have no or minimal side effects. However, a small number of patients can develop eyebrow or eyelid drooping and facial muscle weakness. These side effects recover as the effects of Botox® are temporary.
